The Ellen Macarthur Trust

What they do

The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust is a registered charity set up with its main aim to help children and young adults to regain their confidence through sailing. The four-day trips are for young people who have finished treatment for cancer and FA patients, and who are sailing with the trust for the first time. These trips aim to help rebuild young peoples’ confidence after treatment for cancer. The trips for those aged 18–24 are similar but they may sail further afield and moor for a night in Portsmouth or Southampton during their stay.

The sailing experiences have proved very valuable to the people with FA who have been on their trips (and are still going on them!) Louise Dalgleish, who is now training in her 20’s as a volunteer helper on sailing trips, is quoted on the Ellen MacArthur website saying: “My first trip in 2012 introduced me to others going through similar treatment – we shared experiences, and the sailing really taught me that I could be independent and reminded me of my capabilities, which I often forgot when I was just seen as a patient or unwell person by people I knew”.

Who can apply?

Their free four-day sailing adventures for 8-17 and 18-24 year-olds can be transformational. But whether you get afloat on the Isle of Wight or in Scotland, sailing is only the start!
